Golija is a mountain of the Dinaric mountain range in Montenegro, north-west from Niksic. The mountain crown stretches in the Dinaric direction, in the length of about 40 km, parallel to the southern Njegos Mountain, between Niksic and Gatacko polje, up to 8 km wide. The highest peak is Mleceve grede (1942 m), which is sometimes called Bajovo zdrijelo on maps. Namely, the wider area of the peak is called Mleceve grede, as the rocky approach on the north side is called Bajovo zdrijelo. The highest point of the peak is located on the ridge massif in the central part of the mountain. In the east of it is the second highest peak, Cardak (1,935 m). The mountain was named after the bare width, i.e. the widespread bare peak area, especially on the southern side of the mountain ridge. The popular name for this mountain is in the plural ‘’Golije’’, so we talk about Golije as a mountain. In literature and on maps, the name is given in singular-Golija, after the village at the foot of the mountain. It was made of limestone and dolomite of the Cretaceous age. It is overgrown with forest, mostly on the northern side, while the southern side is bare. The crest of the mountain is an undulating plain suitable for walking on the peaks. The mountain slopes are quite steep, and the central part consists of flat parts, rocky sinkholes and rocky ridges. The slopes towards Piva are overgrown with dense deciduous and coniferous forests, while the southern ones are quite bare. North-west from the mountain Golija, to the mountain Njegos and Somina is the Golija region. Golija and the Golija region are well-known livestock regions. The Monastery of Saint Sava is located here.
